One of the basic disturbances of the teeth-jaw system is the disturbance of the function of chewing. The incomplete and insufficient chewing of food, the change in food ration towards softer and processed food negatively affects the human body as a whole, and the gastrointestinal tract especially. Chewing takes place due to the movements of the lower jaw. Restoring the chewing function means not only replacing the lost or destroyed teeth with denture, but also restoring the movement trajectories of the lower jaw. These trajectories are individual, and depend both on the anatomic form of the crowns of teeth and the mandibular joint.

Hence, the task of a doctor-dentist-orthopedist and a tooth technician is not only to correctly recreate the form of the crown of a tooth for effective chewing of food, but also to make it so as not to cause disturbance in the mandibular joint.

In difficult cases, when the occlusion (bite) is being “reconstructed” completely, the restoration of correct individual movements is necessary, however only one incorrectly made crown can cause irreversible changes in the joint. By means of this device, from the very beginning the dental works are carried out with the account of individual movements of the lower jaw, and demand only small adjustments in the oral cavity.

The position of the upper jaw in relation to the mandibular joint is individual and is transferred into the dental articulator by means of the obverse arch. The obverse arch is a mechanical device, which is fixed to the patient’s head by means of screws and a special occlusion material. Then the arch is set into the articulator and helps the dental technician to correctly position the model of the patient’s upper jaw.
